We worked extra hard that week, and on Friday evening Bobby came around to drive us to the gig. We were deposited in the band’s dressing room. While they played their first set, we listened through the walls, too excited to sit still. We could hear people laughing and talking, but when the band would finish a song, the crowd always responded with a big round of applause. I wondered if they were going to clap like that for our band. When the Blue Notes were ready for a break, we were brought out and introduced as the Junior Blue Notes.

He seemed really proud of me, and from then on he started having me run errands in his car, Big M. I picked up supplies or drove his wife home in the afternoons. On the weekends, when Banks wasn’t playing his horn, he was tinkering around under the hood of his beloved car, and I would stop by his house and talk to him while he worked on the engine. He knew about my gigs with the Junior Blue Notes and was always very curious about how they were going. I invited him to attend important performances of mine, and he showed up fairly often to watch me play.

The building where the cleaners was located is still standing today. It’s at 407 Queen Street, not far from our house on Railroad Street (although now it’s a barber shop). As a young man, my father served as an apprentice to the white owner of another dry-cleaning business in Kinston, but by his early twenties he had opened his own business with his younger brother, James. My mother stayed at home primarily, but she found odd jobs cleaning or sewing to make a little extra money. She was a very resourceful woman.
